Pivoting In a Changing Medicare Advantage Landscape

Medicare Advantage (MA) faces a tighter future with slower payment growth, forcing insurers to cut benefits, raise premiums, and reduce plan options for 2026-2027. The impact is already being felt in commissions. Major carriers such as Humana, UnitedHealthCare, Aetna, Elevance and Cigna have cut commissions to manage costs and control enrollment in less profitable or high-cost plans. This has put pressure on both distributors income and their Agents / Brokers (Brokers). The Broker has a unique relationship with their clients; it is common for clients to ask the individual for their opinion on what Medicare Supplement or MA plan they would recommend. That request is an expression of the trust they place in the advice. We refer to it as Inherent Trust. The future of the Medicare Supplement Professional is elevating their practice to offer advice of subjects that impact both the current and future of their client’s families. Concurrent with this is formulating partnerships with their client’s Centers of Influence (COI) with the intent of building a viable referral network. This is done by understanding that COIs are in the business of offering advice and are willing to create those partnerships if they know the Medicare Supplement individuals are speaking their language: advice.
